PowerView Remote Pairing Guide: Gen 1/2 versus Gen 3
Replacing a Hunter Douglas PowerView remote? Identify your shade system before you buy or begin programming. Legacy PowerView (Gen 1 and Gen 2) and PowerView Gen 3 use different setup methods. A Gen 3 remote is not compatible with earlier PowerView systems.
1. Identify your PowerView generation
Hunter Douglas calls earlier PowerView systems “Legacy PowerView.” Legacy remotes are programmed using buttons on the remote and shade headrail. Gen 3 remotes are programmed in the PowerView app.
A Gen 3 remote has a smooth, single surface rather than separated buttons and features the Hunter Douglas spark. Appearance is a useful clue, but confirm the system using your original paperwork, app information or shade identification before ordering. Pebble and Surface holders can be used across generations, so the holder alone does not identify compatibility. Homes can also contain more than one generation.

2. Choose the matching remote
- Gen 1 or Gen 2 shades: choose our Hunter Douglas PowerView remote for Generation 1 and Generation 2 systems.
- Gen 3 shades: choose our Hunter Douglas PowerView Gen 3 Remote – Black.
Do not use the Legacy button sequence below for a Gen 3 remote. A new remote does not convert your shades to another generation.
3. Pair a Gen 1/2 remote with a shade group
If you already have a working Legacy remote, read the replacement section below first. Multiple Legacy remotes need to share the same shade network before shade programming.
- Press and hold STOP on the Legacy remote until its indicator lights blink, approximately six seconds.
- Within five seconds of entering programming mode, press the desired group number (1–6).
- Press and hold the programming button on the shade headrail. While holding it, press and release OPEN on the remote. Complete this button sequence promptly; Hunter Douglas cautions against holding the shade programming button for more than five seconds.
- The shade should jog to confirm it has joined the group. Release the shade programming button.
- Press and hold STOP until the remote indicator lights stop blinking, approximately six seconds, to exit programming mode.
Select the group and test OPEN, CLOSE and STOP. The shade programming button's location varies by shade model; consult the product's instructions if you cannot identify it.

4. Set up a Gen 3 remote in the PowerView app
The PowerView app is required to set up and program Gen 3 remotes, even if you plan to operate your shades only with a remote afterward.
- Open the PowerView app and use the Home containing your Gen 3 shades.
- Follow the app's guided remote setup. During initial Home and Room setup, the app offers remote programming prompts.
- To edit a configured remote's groups, go to More > Accessories > Remotes, select the group and tap the edit icon.
- Select or deselect the shades for that group, then tap Sync.
- Test the selected group from the remote.
Gen 3 remotes are configured directly in the app. You do not pair them to each other using the Legacy remote-copy sequence.

5. Re-pairing after replacing a remote
Legacy Gen 1/2, with a working original remote: use the original as the source and the replacement as the target. Hunter Douglas's remote-pairing procedure transfers the source remote's group settings to the target.
- Using a paper clip, press and hold the recessed programming button on the back of the target remote for 6–10 seconds. Group numbers flash initially and again after approximately six seconds.
- On the source remote, hold STOP until its indicator lights blink.
- Press and hold STOP on the target remote. While holding it, press and release STOP on the source remote, then release STOP on the target.
- The target's group numbers flash twice to confirm pairing. Follow the manufacturer's guide to finish and test operation.
If the original remote is lost or no longer works, do not attempt to copy from it. The correct recovery approach depends on your existing shade network and other controls. Consult Hunter Douglas's Legacy instructions or contact us before resetting anything.
Gen 3 replacement: configure the replacement through the PowerView app for the existing Home and assign its groups. Do not use Legacy remote-to-remote pairing. If the app cannot find the replacement, use Hunter Douglas support or your installer rather than resetting the whole Home.

6. Understand app behavior before troubleshooting
Gen 3 requires the app for setup and configuration. Legacy shade-to-remote group programming uses the remote and shade buttons instead. Seeing shades together in the PowerView app does not make their remotes interchangeable: mixed-generation homes still have generation-specific equipment and setup requirements.
If a shade does not respond, first confirm the remote generation, selected group and shade power. Check your model's battery and power instructions. Do not use a factory reset as a first troubleshooting step.
